So simple and practical. Yet complex at the same time. Right?
Maybe you can relate. Because in my mind, there’s no question that’s more anxiety provoking for anyone who’s living within reach of the Coronavirus. Because when an unexpected medical event does arrive, life as you know it will quickly begin to spin out of control. Who knows? It may even come to a complete and utter stand still, in a moment’s notice. Everything in your world will just shut down and STOP completely until you go and deal with your medical event.
Not long ago, I got sick with the flu, and set out on a journey to get myself tested for the Coronavirus, and my husband did, too. Yet we had two drastically different outcomes and experiences.
Our whole family had been sick with the flu, yet I was one of the very first people in our State to qualify for the testing. What I did, and how I did it mattered. It got results.
When I called my Doctor’s office to say that I was sick, she called me back almost immediately. I recounted what I had learned about the guidelines to be for testing, according to the Center of Disease Control (CDC). I told her which boxes I checked and aske for her help to get me approved for testing. She acted swiftly, and with certainty. She herself called the Health Department on my behalf to fight and fought to get me qualified for the testing. Moments later, I was on my way to a mobile testing sight. It took only a matter of minutes and my test was complete. It was quick and easy and I remained calm and capable, and in control. The experience itself was stress free.
Yet my husband’s Doctor, on the other hand, didn’t even bother to call him back. Instead, the receptionist gave him a telephone number to the Health Department and told him to call on his own. After being put on hold for what seemed like forever, my husband finally hung up the phone and gave up. Then he did his own research to find a mobile testing sight and drove there in person. After waiting in line, and taking his turn, they ultimately turned him away. They said that he was not “sick enough” and did not qualify for testing. Many others before him, were told the same.
These people were being turned away in droves, even though they were sick and scared, because they hadn’t met the “exact criteria” of knowing someone who was a confirmed Coronavirus case, or having them personally had traveled abroad, or been on a cruise ship. This was very early on in the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, so had nobody realized that somebody had to be the first to get it even IF they had not gone on a cruise? Ridiculous!
But here’s the thing. I’m grateful for that experience because it taught us both an important lesson. It taught us the difference between unacceptable medical care and exceptional medical care. And it reminded us to ask ourselves that ONE important question, “What can I DO to stay safe?”
